Heaven gained an Angel on June 29, 2026, with the passing of Gussie Ballard Smith, who had celebrated her 101st birthday.
Gussie was born June 14, 1925, to George and Lillie Belle Ballard on the homestead in Milligan Canyon East of Cardwell, MT. In 1943, she graduated from Whitehall High School as class salutatorian, something she was very proud of.
Gussie married William "Bud" Smith on October 16th, 1943. They ranched, raising cattle and sheep for years in the Drummond, Bitterroot and Mission Valleys. Gussie's grandchildren helped her feed many bum lambs and calves. Gussie and Bud purchased Bartlett Creek Outfitters in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in 1961. Gussie cooked in the Bob Marshall and Deer Lodge camps until she was 80 years old, riding her faithful horse, Snip.
Gussie so enjoyed those years, had many stories to tell, and made long-lasting friendships. She worked at the Ronan Folk Shop for 10 years as a secretary. She was known for her outstanding meals and baked goods, always having treats and a full cookie jar. Gussie always had flower beds that were beautiful and full of life. She grew large gardens where she canned everything, always sharing jars of salsa with everyone.
Survived by her children, Becky (Dan) Smith, Zana (Zim) Lytle, Joe (Diana) Smith, Penny (Steve) O'Hern, all of Ronan, MT, and Mike Smith of Deer Lodge. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-granddaughters.
She was the end of her generation, preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, and a great-grandson.
A special thanks to her caregivers, Ann Sias and Lisa Larson.
